Realising the problem

I'm 16 years old and I am CONSTANTLY picking and biting my fingers, and I have done for many years. And a couple months ago, my friend told me that I need to stop, as I could get infections and such. But I just told her that Ill be fine, I havn't in the past, so why would I get one now? I can pick and bite till I bleed, and my fingers look absolutley dreadfull. It hurts to write and do things with my hands. And about two months ago I realised 'this is a problem i NEED sorting out'. No one I know does this, so why me? I can't stress enough that i'm ALWAYS doing it. And I really need to stop. It's embarrasing, it's ugly and really confusing. What do I do!?
I am so glad I found this website. I thought it was just me. My husband yells at me all the time for picking my cuticles but I can't seem to stop even if they are bleeding or hurt like hell. I just started this habit 7 months ago and I am 57 years old. It seems to be my thumbs I go after the most. I have been diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome not sure if this has anything to do with it. It started around the same time I was diagnosed with RLS. How can I stop this? I can't seem to do it on my own. BTW I have solar nails and it does not matter.
Also, there is one finger inparticular that I bite and pick, and on that finger 3 hard lumps have formed. Should I be worried?
