gums

lately i've found that i pick at my gums A Lot. it does hurt but it also feels pleasurable? I find myself picking until they bleed and sticking thinks like safety pins/wires between my teeth. Whats a worst case scenario of the results of this and does anyone have tips on how to stop? am i alone in this?
