im 20 and ive been eating my finger skin all my life.

i'm 20 and i'm happily married and i have a 6 1/2 month old and i'm pregnant again. but all my life, i mean...since i can remember. i have always bitten and eatin the skin off my fingers, i used to bite my nails too but i stopped that. and i eat the skin on my lips sometimes and even scabs when i get them, i used to cut myself just to get scabs so i could pick them. my husband helped me stop that. the biggest thing i do now is just bite my fingers. and i like doing it, its weird, and my fingers look horrible but it makes me feel better. but i'm afraid of future problems with the skin on my fingers, cuz i've been doing it for years. and i haven't found a way to stop. even strong will doesn't help.

I'm 47 and have biting and picking my fingers for as long as I can remember. I tried all the treatments when I was growing up but nothing worked. My picking usually ends with bleeding and infections in my fingers at my cuticle area. Today I've been to the doctors to get antibiotics, which I hate, as I have another infection. I can still hear the doctor from my childhood telling me to just stop doing it. Ha. If he could see me now. How pointless his chastising was. I consider myself strong-willed but I don't think this problem I have has anything to do with willpower. I just do it without even thinking. Anyway, I decided to write on this forum as I do have a way to curb my picking and if it helps even one of you it's worth the time to write. Sounds crazy since I've just been the Doctors with an infection but really, it would be 10 infections not one if I didn't go and get my acrylic nails put on. Sounds vain but I promise you that the thickness of the acrylic over my nail means I don't have the ability to pick with the usual precision that I seem to like. The other reason I think it reduces my picking is that I just can't get a hold on the cuticles to start the picking cycle as the acrylic gets in the way. I have to get them re-done (or filled) every few weeks as once they start to grow away from my cuticle I start to pick again. I've had the acrylic nails on for about 18 years and the odd time I didn't have them on, the picking just went wildly out of control. People think I have some sort of excema or dermatitis when I don't have them on. The new Shellac's or Gels don't work as they aren't think enough on the nail. Another benefit is that my nails look nice with the acrylic and paint on them which is something I hadn't been used to ever. I used to hide my fingers. My graduation picture serves as a reminder of how I would hide. I am holding my certificate in such a way that you can't see my fingers but it is quite odd. Anyway good luck to all of. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Daffodil, I have come to exactly the same answer to my problem...acrylics. I am 49 years old and been picking since I can remember. When I have acrylics on, I stop. When I don't have them on, I'm picking all of the time..can't stop. So acrylics is the answer.Glad to hear from someone with the same problem..Elaine

i used to peel the skin from my fingers when i was younger. im 27 now and i rarely do it anymore except i now pick the skin on my feet and my face and i chew the inside of my cheek. its driving me insane and i know i have to get help somewhere. i havent gone to my doctor for the worry that he might think im crazy. when i used to pick the skin on my fingers they became so sore that when i was in school i couldnt hold a pen and i could get no work done. then in 2004 i developed athletes foot and thats where picking my feet began. now its ritualistic. i hope you find help for your problem. im going to take some steps towards stopping this. i have picked a small hole into my face and its scaring me that i can go that far without realising what im doing

Omg im another person who thought it was just me. Im 25 (male) just like most I started on my nails, eventually my nails stopped growing past the ends of my fingers, I then started on my skin alot of the time I dont notice im doing it until I realize my fingers are bleeding. Im sick of having constant sore fingers and having to make sure I avoid bumping my fingers on this but even with this I cant seem to stop.

Hey. I'm also a guy who deals with skin picking/eating and I'm glad I've found somewhere that others like me are centralized. The only problem is that almost everyone here is female and seems freaked out/afraid to respond to me cause I'm a guy. I'm a human just like everyone one else and am a dealing derma just like everyone else here. If you wanna talk further, hit me up.

I can't believe my relief at finding this forum. I'm a 16 year old girl and a terrible picker/biter, have been for as long as I can remember. Started on nails like everyone else, somehow ended up on skin. Now I pick everything. I bite my fingers all day and when I get home I use scissors and clippers until my fingers are bleeding and eat the skin. They're all callused and colourless. Once or twice a week, or when my fingers are too sore to touch, I attack my feet. Walking is often painful for me, and forget being barefoot. Once I picked the inside of my ear so much I got an outer ear infection that was the most painful experience of my life. I hate picking. It's miserable and ugly. But I can't stop!

After recently being diagnosed with ocd (as well as a lot of other things - I have a very Type A personality, emotionally deprived childhood, struggled with anorexia, anxiety, depression and more) I can't help but think my ocd and derma is linked. My therapist wants to help me stop but I don't know if I can. I'm sad but uplifted to know that I'm not the only one and it's not just a bad "habit" that I should be able to just stop.

I'm 15 years old and I have been biting and eating my finger nails and the skin around my nails constantly for as long as I can remember. Most of the time I do not even realize that I am doing it. It happens all the time and it really worries me when I look at my fingers and see how destroyed they look! I feel as if I cannot show anyone my hands because of their horrible look. It makes me glad to know that I am not alone with this problem and I feel that I can relate to the same problem that we are all having

I do this too. When I get nervous I pick the skin on my thumbs by my nails with my index finger. And I bit on it. It's such a bad Habbit and i hate it but I can't stop. As much as I try I can't ! It sucks because I want to get my nails done but I'm embarrassed about the skin and small scabs around my nails.

I've been eating my skin since I was 7 years old. I do it alot during class and because i find every class boring and i do it alot when im scared. SOmetimes i just use my fingers to peel the skin and i try to resist myself but its basically just impossible. For a fact i know that i'm the only one in the family who's got this my grandparents don't have it my cousins don't my parents don't and my uncles nad aunties don't too. I don't know why i have this but i try to stop from time to time even though its hard. I think the only times i won't chew my skin is when i'm eating or playing games or when i'm really concentrating on something like watching tv. Recently i've been trying to find out people withthe same condition as me and turns out i'm the only one and i'm really happy now. SOmetimes my friends ask me why i do it and i normally tell them i actually don't knwo some of them help me stop it but i would stop for like 2 hours and i just keep biting again. I hope i can stop my addcition and you too.
