not sure whether anyone has said this but i've just started using calamine lotion, although i've not seen much of an improvement with regards to scars, it really helps prevent picking as it makes your skin white so you can't see your pores as easily. I've really noticed a reduction in the amount of picking i'm doing so thanks for mentioning this! :)

Hi, I am willing to buy Calamine Lotion over the chemist, but have you tried Aloe Vera? I am wondering which would be the best method to fade old scars. With my night time regime, I have been using lemon juice as a toner to even out skin tone and to prevent spots and blackheads. If the Calamine Lotion works, I will only use it at night time on big spots that might occur and minus using the lemon regime so I don't combine the effects of the two. I have been using Sudocrem to splodge on anywhere I might have recently picked or old marks that has taking months to fade (partly because I keep picking at it) which sometimes has dead skin over it, and even though that might roll off in the shower sometimes, the skin underneath it is still a grey colour. The Sudocrem doesn't seem to work as effective or fast enough of what Calamine Lotion would offer however Sudocrem also contains zinc. So if calamine lotion works with new, old marks and spots, then I would ditch Sudocrem.

I never thought in a million years Skin picking was a real diagnosed problem , I always said to my self I just have really bad acne I keep trying different creams, washes etc but nothing work I started noticing that every night before or after taking a shower I would stare at the mirror and squeeze every little bump in my face ,arms , legs basically my whole body. I am trying everyday to stop its very hard ;( but at least I know I have a problem and that I am not alone . My face has never looked flawless there is always a spot in my face (that I created obviously ) I know is wrong to hurt my self but I will not give up I will take a day at a time . Good night hopefully by next years Summer we can all go out on our bathing suits ,I have started using baking Soda and it works wonders but the only solution is to stop tearing at my skin .

October 04, 2012

Hi micha400! Is the one you purchased the original topical calamine lotion? It should be a pink, liquid substance and not a cream substance (and yes, the one I'm referring to comes in a bottle). This is the best one to use for healing your skin because it has fewer ingredients and the ingredients are pure so they won't harm or irritate your skin further. Also, I've mentioned on here before that you should sleep with the calamine lotion on overnight and I would like to retract that statement. Over time I found that sleeping with it on only clogged my pores and created new bumps for me to obsess over and pick at. The best thing to do is to apply 3 layers at a time (allow each layer to fully dry before applying the next), Let it set for an hour and wash it off using a gentle face wash. The one I use is Cetaphil Antibacterial Cleansing Bar. Remember, NO SCRUBBING and only PAT DRY your skin. At night, allow your skin to breathe and only apply a light-weight moisturizer. Before going to bed, wash your face one final time using a gentle facial cleanser and apply witch hazel to your entire face (I use T.N. Dickinson's Witch Hazel). Allow your skin to dry after you've applied the witch hazel and follow with a light-weight moisturizer. It's imperative that you use a moisturizer at night to keep your skin from overdrying and becoming oily and/or flaky. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! :)

Going to go get my calamine lotion NOW! Thak you God for this web-site! Over the last 10 years I have become reclusive, missing time with family and friends because of my picking, bleeding, sores and scaring! I want to stop but I don't want to stop..you prob. know this feeling. It is a high. I will lock myself in my bathroom for hours picking my eyebrows until I soak a towel with blood. Then I have to become a master of cover up with make-up. On my chin as well! If I felt the sores were just too bad, I just hid in my house. I am so ashamed and tired of living for this disorder! (I didn't even know it was a disorder!!!) I have missed so much but the beginning of this year I made a comitment to change. I started with electroysis which has helped somewhat but I still have continued to pick. I feel such relief that I am not alone (not that I would wish this on ANYONE!) I get inspired by your stories of success, ache for your pain and want to change this about myself and LIVE again! Thank you for being honest! I wish each and everyone of you success and luck!

October 05, 2012

I know the feeling! But I promise IT DOES GET BETTER! It's not a habit that can be subdued overnight but it is a habit that can be changed over time. I first learned that compulsive skin picking was an actual condition about a year and a half ago and it has taken me this long to be able to look in a mirror and not obsess over every tiny little "flaw". My skin looks a million times better than it did a year ago, or even 3 months ago! I have to credit a lot of my progress to this site and calamine lotion. I've had a lot of slip-ups and relapses throughout this long journey to recovery and both this site and the calamine lotion have helped me to pick myself back up and face the world another day. I wish you the best of luck and hope that the calamine lotion is as effective for you as it has been for me. XO - newperspective :)

Does calamine form scabs? Because scabs make me pick in order to applu make up smoothly...
avatar

October 08, 2012

Hi goal orientated! If the calamine lotion is applied to freshly picked skin it does not form a scab - it just dries out the wound and stops it from seeping/oozing. In fact, calamine lotion has actually helped to smooth out my wounds, making it easier for me to apply makeup over top of them and conceal them easier. If you apply calamine lotion to a scab that has already formed, it has the same effect. It just smooths out the scab so that it's not as noticeable under your makeup, thus allowing your skin to completely heal until the scab is ready to fall off on its own. I hope this helps!

October 08, 2012

Hi guys, I wondered if any of you have asked your Doctor about the safety of long-term calamine lotion use? Or drug interactions? Or if it's safe during pregnancy/breastfeeding? I am always leery about using any product that's considered an OTC drug over large areas or for a long time.
avatar

October 08, 2012

Hey olivegreen! Calamine lotion is completely safe to use. It's actually the #1 recommended go-to product for pregnant women who suffer from skin ailments, such as exzema. :)

October 09, 2012

Hey everyone! Just a quick note - I only use the calamine lotion if I have wounds to heal. I don't recommend using the calamine lotion if your skin is wound-free. The calamine lotion can be very drying if used too often and ESPECIALLY more so if you are using it in combination with other drying agents/acne medications ie. Salicylic Acid, BP, etc. When using the calamine lotion, I DO NOT recommend using it with other acne skincare products because it will not only irritate your skin, but it will also dry your skin out, causing the oil glands in your skin to work in overdrive to compensate for the lack of moisture and this can cause your skin to become oily and create new breakouts. A lot of us (not everyone) pick because we have acne breakouts and I would hate for the misuse of calamine lotion to be the cause of any further skin-picking episodes. Calamine lotion IS truly effective IF used properly. Good luck and I hope this tip helps! :)

October 11, 2012

Hello I was wondering if you could help I've had a wound on my face and it will not go away its flat and very red and trendier but not seeping it forms Like a new layer of skin scab over it which makes it look worse with make up on so I rip the skin o and the process stars again I have a family party in 10 days time please give me some advice thanks x
avatar

October 11, 2012

Hi Needhelp! I would love to help you in any way I can :) To start, what products are you currently using?
avatar

October 12, 2012

Well I've started using calamine loition today I hope it works woul you recommend a way of using it at all :)
avatar

October 12, 2012

Absolutely! When I first started using calamine lotion, I would wear it as a mask all over my face all day and then wash it off and apply another layer at night to sleep in. I would NOT recommend going this route. It clogged my pores and caused new breakouts. The best way to do it is to apply three layers at a time (allow each layer to fully dry before applying the next) all over your face. If you have all day to hide indoors, then it becomes a little more of a process, but so worth it! Be sure to wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser. I'm preferential to Cetaphil's Antibacterial Cleansing Bar because the Triclosan in it helps prevent breakouts AND because it's an antibacterial, it also helps prevent infections. After washing your face, PAT dry and apply the first layer of calamine lotion. After that layer has completely dried, apply the second layer. Once that layer has dried, apply the third and final layer. Let it sit on your face for no more than 2 hours (I personally only keep it on my face for an hour at a time), and then wash your face GENTLY with your facial cleanser of choice. NO SCRUBBING! Pat your face dry and repeat process. You'll notice that some of the calamine lotion will stick to the wound and not fully come off when you wash your face, THAT'S OK! :) Before repeating the process, make sure your skin has fully dried from washing your face before applying a new layer of calamine lotion. At night, before bed, wash your face one final time and if you have it, follow with an application of witch hazel all over your face. Allow the witch hazel to dry and follow with a LIGHT moisturizer of choice. I personally use Wal-Mart's Equate brand of Proactive's Repairing Lotion. It's super cheap (less than $5) and it's surprisingly soothing. It contains 2.5% BP to help prevent new breakouts AND it really helps speed up the healing process WITHOUT clogging my pores OR irritating my skin. :) I hope this helps and I'm here if you need me - good luck!
avatar

October 15, 2012

Hello I re picked the scab of now it's red again I think I was out of frustration I'm going to stick with the calamine loition would you say it's worked for you and also how long does it take for your skin to heal using it and would I sleep with it ?
avatar

October 15, 2012

It depends on how deep the wound is... If it's a surface wound, I would say it takes around 3 days. If it's deeper, I would give it a week. No, I do not recommend sleeping with the calamine lotion on your face - it will only clog your pores. Do you have a Wal-Mart close by?
avatar

October 15, 2012

No I live in the uk so I don't what would you reccomend as I could order it on eBay :) and thanks for your support your really helping me feel positive I hope you can keep this topic active :) at the minute I brought a witch stick contains witch hazel and I also put on differin ? I'm unsure what to use
avatar

October 15, 2012

What cleanser are you using at the moment? If you can purchase the Cetaphil Antibacterial Cleansing Bar, it would help A LOT with the treatment of acne AND it's really gentle so it also helps a lot with the healing process. If you could refrain from using Differin for the time being, that would also help speed up the healing. Wash your face, preferably with the Cetaphil Antibacterial Cleansing Bar and follow with an application of calamine lotion. After you've washed the calamine lotion off, apply the witch hazel to your face. Once that has completely dried, apply a light moisturizer of your choice (whatever works for you and your skin). It'll be safe to continue using the Differin AFTER your wound(s) have completely healed. If you use a combination of the products listed above, it will bring a good/even balance to your skin so that it doesn't become too oily or too dry. I hope this answers your questions and remember, if you need me I'm always here :)

Oh and in using the witch hazel before I go bed do you think that will work ? And Thankyou for your constant support your a good person
avatar

October 17, 2012

I definitely recommend using the witch hazel before bed. I use it both in the morning and at night. :) Thank you for your kind words. :) I only hope that the advice I've given has helped. Stay strong and it WILL get better!

October 12, 2012

Same here. You have to leave the new skin alone. Do not peel it off. It will heal if you leave it. Trusrt me i have been through the same thing

October 10, 2012

Hi newperspective! Thanks for replying to my post a few days ago...went and got some witchhazel too! I got a question for you if you don't mind..Have you ever had hard skin devlop around a healing sore. It's so weird because I'm not sure exactly why this happens. It's not exactly a scab or dry skin. My skin almost looks slightly bubbled up around the healing wound, except that the skin is hard and almost has a grainy or maybe rubbery feel to it and it forms a perfect raised circle around the circumference of the wound. It's so frustrating because my sore would be pretty even with the rest of my skin and it wouldn't look indented at all if it weren't for this hard grainy/rubberish raised skin. Do you know what this is or if it will just scab up and fall off like normal? Thank you so much for all of your kind advice and help, it really means so much because I don't know who else I could ask.
avatar

October 10, 2012

Hi SpottyFace! I would have to see it to know for sure, but if I had to guess, my guess would be that's it's scar tissue that has developed overtime due to excessive picking. I have a similar scar to what you are describing on my chin. Now that I've left it alone for a significant amount of time (6 months), It's not as noticeable as it used to be. Do your best to not mess with it and it should even out a little more overtime. I really hope you notice a positive change in your skin from using the witch hazel and please keep me posted on how it works for you. As always, thank you for your kind words and confidence in me. :)
avatar

October 11, 2012

Hey Newperspective, Thanks for your quick response! It's so reassuring to know you are there, a big heart-felt thank you for that. It might be scar tissue ( I thought about that too) except that the wound is healing and in the process of scabbing over and its very tender (but I don't think infected at all). So I didn't know if scar tissue could form that fast? Also, when I put calamine on the raised skin, it definitely has a scabbed over feeling...which is good because that helps me heal faster than keeping it moist. (I know people say that keeping wounds moist speeds healing but I'm not sure that works for me). So I'm just layering on the calamine and hoping that the whole thing scabs up, heals, and somewhat evens out! I'm going to see my husband in about a week and half for my 30th Birthday and I'm sooo hoping that I will look a little bit better!! Thank you again for everything, you're a good friend:)
avatar

October 11, 2012

You're so sweet! :) I check in everyday and I try to be here as a support system for everyone and anyone who needs it. You could be right about it just being part of the scab, only time will tell. :) Also, I'm with you on needing my wounds to dry up as opposed to keeping them moist - they heal faster for me when I dry them out (even if it means a scab forming). If you continue using the Cetaphil Antibacterial Cleansing Bar, Calamine Lotion, and now the Witch Hazel, you'll be healed up in no time! If you need a substitute acne medication to replace your Salicylic Acid toner, at night I've been using Wal-Mart's Equate version of Proactive's repairing lotion. It's light and surprisingly soothing and it allows my skin to breathe at night while preventing acne breakouts AND it doesn't clog my pores! It contains 2.5% BP. I don't know if your skin is sensitive to BP, but I find that BP works better for me than Salicylic Acid. This lotion has also helped my wounds to heal really fast without causing any irritation. If you use the Calamine lotion during the day as a mask and then use this moisturizer at night, you'll see a HUGE difference. The moisturizer is super cheap too - I think you can buy it for under $5, but it can only be found at Wal-Mart. Let me know if you decide to try it :) Hang in there! You can beat this and your thirties are going to be FABULOUS!

October 15, 2012

Hey Girl! (sorry for being so informal..but I can't help but feel like we're friends:)!! I saw on another post that you're actually younger than me..lol...I just assumed you were older because of how much wisdom and support you offer. You always support others, but how are you doing with this? My skin isn't going to be perfect for this weekend, but I have hopes that I'll at least pass for decent:) I meant to ask you, what kind of calamine do you use? I have bought two different brands and they are surprisingly different. The walgreens brand is a light pink and almost a little watery and a second brand is darker pink and extremely thick with much more of a medicine smell to it. Have you come across this and if so, which would you prefer? I think I like the more watery kind a little better. It seems to dry out the wounds better. Something else that I have come across that's pretty good is curad silver solution. Its not oily or greasy like neosporin, it's a gel and dries pretty quickly. Sometimes I put it on first and then apply the calamine and that seems to work pretty well..just wanted to pass that along. Hope you're doing well..and just remember that we are here for you too!!
avatar

October 16, 2012

Haha! I love it! ;) Thank you so much for the compliment! I've been told I have an old soul. :) I use the HUMCO brand from Wal-Mart. The one from Walgreens would be the most comparable to the one I use consistency-wise. If I remember correctly, the one I use has the exact same ingredients as the one from Walgreens (so I would stick with that one). I've actually been doing fantastic! I've come a VERY long way this past year. I DID pick 3 spots a week ago, but they're almost completely healed. I've learned not to beat myself up over it and to just roll with the punches - no pun intended ;) I think it's helped that I've FINALLY found a skincare regimen that works for me - both for my wound-free AND wounded skin. I love being here and helping others through the ups AND downs of CSP. Even though I still struggle every single day with this disorder, I've learned how to cope with it by learning from my mistakes and bettering myself for it. I feel like I've learned a lot and I want to share my knowledge with others so that maybe I can help make coping with this daily struggle just a little bit easier. Offering advice and support to others has been the best therapy I could've ever hoped for and for that I have all of you to thank. By giving me the opportunity to help you, you've helped me :)
avatar

October 17, 2012

I've been told the exact same thing!..That I have an old soul and that I was born way after my time. I'm normally a very common sense oriented person. I'm not perfect by any means, but I'm a responsible, mature, and reasonable person. However, this is one thing that has taken a hold of me, but I'm determined to stop this Now! These are my last days in my twenties and I think by Saturday (the day I turn the big 3-0) my terrible sores will be just pink spots on my face (even if they are slightly indented..I do hope they fill in a bit). This last month has been the worst its ever been and I stayed in my apartment every weekend because I was ashamed of my own face. Going to work and dealing with the stares was almost more than I could handle. Even though I'm sure I'll make a few slips, I never want to go through this again, but I never want to forget how it felt either. My goal is to use this opportunity to begin my 30s on the right track. I hope that I can help others the way that you and others on this site have helped me. You, and all the others on this site, are incredible people.
avatar

October 18, 2012

You're pretty incredible and special too! Don't ever forget that! ;) Sorry I haven't responded sooner... yesterday was pretty hectic for me. My husband and I are in the process of buying a house and we close on it in 2 weeks! It's both exciting and stressful (my skin has been paying the price lately :( ) I've been lathering on the calamine lotion like crazy. Yesterday was the biggest picking session I've had in months. Now it's time for me to take my own advice and just leave my skin alone and allow it to heal. PATIENCE+CONSISTENCY=HEALING ;) I'll keep you guys posted on how long it takes my skin to heal this time around. I'm not perfect and I want you guys to know that slip-ups happen and it's OK, just as long as once you relapse you are capable of picking yourself back up and continue moving forward. I hope you are doing well and that your skin is healing up nicely. XO

October 11, 2012

Before I came to your site, somehow I have found out on my own about calamine lotion for brightening the skin and healing acne. But I have never tried it, so for the very first time last night I used calamine lotion which I had in my bathroom cabinet for years to use for my grandsons excema and I tell you over night within 24 hours my skin was lighter, I was so amazed! I had to put a testimonial here on this page. I have used a product that is all natural and plant based on my skin. Each day I apply it twice a day morning and night, and my skin is getting brighter each day with this product. I am brown skinned and by end of next year I will be almost closest to being very very light brown toned skin.

Okay does calamine lotion work when the wound is open? Or just when it has already scabbed over? PLEASE ANSWER ASAP

October 16, 2012

It works even better when the wound is open and fresh, but it also works when the wound has already scabbed over. :)

October 16, 2012

Hello, I have always picked at my face since I started getting acne. What happens Is I get a pimple and, I pop it. I know, I know..It bad for the skin..but when It a white head, it's virtually inpossible for me to not pop it. Anyways, After popping the pimple the very top layer of the skin peels off... :(.. after washing my face it form a layer of skin that i white the heal making it impossible to cover with make up. I actually have one right now.. i keep messing with it at night when I get home from work and it seems to be flat without a scab after peeling for hours.. still very red of course. Then I put nivea dry skin lotion on it, fall asleep and, when I wake up the layer of skin has come back to play. Today I just left it, applied coverup (even though it looks horrible) and am tryign to not touch it. I have not peeled it again since last night. The place where it is on my face is very annoying, It's on the skin right next to my lip in the place that creases when you smile :( ..so it is dried up and cracks if i open my mouth to big or even smile slightly. I need help. Could this help with what I'm experiancing?
avatar

October 16, 2012

Hello Butterfly! The calamine lotion will definitely help. While there are certain products that can help speed up the healing process, the key is to not touch it or pick at it anymore. If you can apply calamine lotion to the spot and avoid picking at it, it will heal in no time! :)
