Personal system: rewards, hypnosis, and soothing

I've been around the block of many therapies. My psychiatrist was very expensive so I started using this 3 pronged approach at home. My approach uses (1) reward calendar (2) hypnosis (3) pampering :) I printed monthly calendars from which I display on my fridge and bought good old-fashioned kindergarten-style reward stickers. Each day I go pick-free, I get a sticker for the day! It's juvenile and hilarious, which drives me to stick with it. You can even use iphone apps for this. On days I slip, it's okay. (2) I can STILL get a sticker if I listen to my "Stop Skin Picking" hypnosis audio track, which I have found very helpful. This way, picking is not a "fail," but not doing anything about it is. (3) I use 1% hydrocortisone "anti-itch" cream to soothe the redness and scarring to lower the shame and desire to pick. I have two tubes, one on my nightstand and one in my purse. I've made it a nightly routine to moisturize and use hydrocortisone as needed. Once I accumulate 30 days worth of stickers, I "win" a manicure for myself. I'm still not 100%, but this has been the most helpful system for me and lets me focus on the positives. At some point in your journey, I think it's healthy to turn this into a fun game if you can!

Hey - I just posted about that stop skin picking hypnosis download! I also downloaded the stop popping zits one. it really worked for a while but I drifted really easily in my commitment. Do you find it still effective when you go back to it after a while?

Hi there - Yeah, I drifted really easily too! I used the "Stop Skin Picking" one from Uncommon Knowledge. I've also been to hypnotists in person but stopped going because of the expense. I also understand that a large part of hypnosis is your own doing, a person or audio guide just helps you get there yourself. Both with hypnotherapists and audio tracks, I find that the "effect" is relatively short-lived. I would LOVE to be one of those people who can let go of the habit after 1-2 sessions only. So my way of dealing with this was to create this system where I basically try to go without it and use hypnosis when I slip. Since the audio track takes some time, I also have a time-management incentive not to pick - I don't have to spend 20 minutes on the track! Most importantly, slipping becomes an opportunity as opposed to a negative, shameful thing each time.

I went to two hypnotherapy sessions about 7 years ago and really she had no clue about how to approach my picking, and I was incredibly inpatient and not really ready to open up, so it flopped. I think I just wasnt ready or able to invest the time and money into seeing it through. I realise now though that its worth investing in. Yes, I use the uncommon knowledge downloads, and theyre great but I agree they feel quite superficial so its easy to slip. I think if you have a handle on it yourself and have other systems to stop picking, then they can be extra help. I feel like twenty minutes is really not that much time - though saying that I always found a reason not to iisten. but anyway, nice to find someone else who has used them and had the same reaction I have.
