just found out about dermatillomania. should i go to the doctors?

hey guys. i can't tell you how glad i am to have found this site! i was just reading a magazine and there was an article about it and i was so shocked cause it completely applied to me! it sounds cliched but i really did think i was the only one who did this and that its a bad habit i should have been able to stop ages ago. wondering if i should go to my doctors even though im like 100% sure i have it? thats it really just saying hi! :)

I, too, recently found out about it!!! I believe this is what I have also. I don't believe you should goto the doctors mainly because they are just going to inform you on what you already know. Just try try try to correct your obsessive behaviors and shift your energy to something different. Lmk how your progress goes because I'm on the same road to recovery.

i think you should go to a psychologist (which is what i am gonna do soon). they should be able to help you with cognitive behavioural therapy, which is the best treatment for our condition yet. other than that, try some techniques and tips you can find online or even in this forum. the most important step is to recognise that we have a serious disorder, and to make conscious efforts to battle it.

Doctors don't usually know what to do, and neither do psychologists, unless they have special training (see www.trich.org for a list of those that do). At the risk of being self-promotional ;-) I'll add that I'm a health coach specializing in skin picking, and my clients are really happy with the results they get with me. If you want to check out my site you can find it at stop-picking.com. Btw, I'm running a special in July for newsletter subscribers, so be sure to sign up (you also get my top 10 tips free).
