Does the skin heal completely?

So I'm on day 6 of not biting the skin around my nails. They definitely feel and look better than they did a week ago, but I'm wondering if they'll always be discolored? Will I ever have normal fingers? It's been a habit for about 30 years... so I don't know. And I can't really find much online about how the skin looks after stopping for a while. I'd love to hear from someone who has given up this bad habit. Thanks!

Well for anyone else that might have the same question as I posted up there... it's been almost 3 weeks since I stopped picking/biting the skin around my fingernails and though it's still mostly discolored, there are some areas where normal skin is starting to form with a normal color. I'd still be embarrassed to show off my fingers but they do look WAY better. So happy I stopped!
