I don't know if you would be able to help me or not. I do pick but I also self injure. Not sure if you would view one in the same. All I know is this much. I have been in and out of treatment and not a single one of them has been able to cure me of this. I am 42 and have done this off and on since I was 7. Cher

I pick. Plain and simple.lol Mostly at my scalp. Very few and selected friends know about this...I'm not so sure I want the whole world to know lol.

I know what you mean Becca. While the idea of someone who actually understands our condition giving you intensive treatment is really appealing, it would be very hard to admit publically. But then I see people lose weight on biggest loser type shows and think they are so brave and then wonder if people watching them helps them keep weight off - maybe if I worried about people seeing my pick and watching for it I would stop? Who knows. I pick all the time too - started with my scalp when I was an infant and moved on to other body parts during my teens. Worst at the moment is arms, face and legs but scalp still tops the list. My family knows but that is it - although anyone around me frequently would have to notice. I don't hide my picking of the scalp - I figure people can't notice but sometimes worry they do. But I try really hard not to pick anywhere else in front of people. Am trying so hard to kick this but 35 years is a loooonnnngggggg time.... I lay awake thinking about picking - it really is like being a drug user or something. I have no other vices - don't drink, smoke, use drugs or anything.... just pick. Arrghhhhh

I have the same problem belsy. The problem is that like you said the idea of free specialized treatment and understanding is tempting, those weight loss shows differ though because in my opinion it is much more socially acceptable to be overweight than to be a skin picker. Much of america is overweight and it's something that everyone is aware of and understands. Skin pickers mostly hover under the radar though. I would be so ashamed to admit that I pick my scalp. I feel that even people I know would be disgusted by it. I can't imagine millions of viewers feeling that same way. While I applaud everyone else that is game for this study I just wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself. The benefit of this show would be that it would comfort and give hope to SO many people who suffer from the same problems. I'm 22 now and I can't imagine knowing that others suffered from the same issue when I was younger. I would have felt infinitely better knowing that others make excuses for bathroom breaks just to pick, that people would be able to advise me on how to cover bald spots, that I shouldn't feel the guilt that I was doing something disgusting to myself and that even worse it felt so good that I couldn't bare to give it up. I hope the show works out for you all and I will definitely be watching.

I too am in Australia Belsy and have only just discovered that this is a recognised condition!! I was searching Google to see if I could see it as a simple medical problem.. maybe for a cream to buy or something! Now I realise it isn't that easy as I actually 'like' picking at my scalp and have done so for at least 28 years in secret. I think hard and deeply and this is the time when the picking is at it's worse. I want to stop. I want to stop eating so much chocolate too. I want to lose weight without the aid of slimming pills or extreme short term diets. I want to be happy. I want to feel free :-)
