It is...not normal, but neither is picking your skin for hours on end, so we are in the same boat. Recently i have managed to overcome my picking, and so i belive that you can aswell. However, you have to really relize it isnt worth it. Hurting yourself cannot be justified. You CAN stop, i belive that with every atom of me, but you need to really try. Not just for you, but for everyone around you. :) When you find yourself doing it, wear a rubber band that you snap when you catch yourself, or, (if your a girl) apply lip gloss constatntly to make your lips taste odd and be slippery, harder to grip. Things like that may help. :)

I wish it was as simple as using a rubber band or using lip gloss. But lip gloss does not help me to stop biting on the inside of my cheeks or the skin right by my teeth. When i say i literally bite all the insides is because i check all the skin that my teeth can reach

Hey sbj, i think a few of these posts have answered your question. I for one LOVE the taste of blood. Which is why i bite all the skin i have in my mouth. I bite so deep sometimes that I get down to what I think are the fat cells inside my lip. Theyr these tiny little balls and once I reach one and pull it out, others start to follow. There is some pain and because of it my eyes water so much, but it feels so good.

I do the exact same thing. I use my fingers to peel back dry skin, chew it off, then suck the blood. I've always liked the taste of blood but I don't ever tell anyone that because it's kinda weird. I can totally relate.

Dry skin doesnt usually happen to me, i keep my lips nice and soft. I usually bite and eat the skin inside my cheeks, when the area im biting is all chewed up with missing chunks of skin thats when i use my nails, to scrape away whats left. Why would it be weird to like the taste of blood? Everyone is different, and we all have different nervous ticks.

Hey, Im a 22 yr old female and ever since I can remember, I have been biting my lip. I bite huge, deep chunks that make my lips start to gush almost instantly. I love the feeling of carving away at my flesh and then the sweet taste of blood that follows. I try to bite as deep as possible because I love to chew on the chunks I pull out, it has such perfect consistency. As far back as I can remember, I would bite endlessly, then complain to my mom that my lips hurt. Your right, eating certain foods KILL! Like you, I bite when I'm bored and/or hungry and also when I'm nervous. Its more convenient when my hands are free but that doesn't stop me. I use my hands a lot to aid with my biting to get in as deep as possible whether it be using a knuckle to push my lip in between my teeth or scraping away with my nail. Sure this habit I guess is a little sick but I've been doing this since my teeth grew out. I cant just stop! This is who I am.

I see this was a whopping 8 years ago, and in having this exact problem in the exact age range (highschool) I was wondering if anyone has found a solution to this?

Hey, same problem. 29 years now, picking/biting my lips/cheeks since I was like 8. I used to pick my lips uncontrollably and bite so much that the dentist told me I've lost a lot of tissue on my lip. That was about 10 years ago. After this I started to be really being conscious of picking my lips. I've now stopped picking my lips with my finger nails. I attribute this to always applying lip balm. I'd have 4-5 lip balm sticks everywhere, one at work, one in my bag, one beside my bed etc. Constantly applying it. Since I'd pick unconsciously, the moment I'd picked my lips with my fingernails I'd feel the lip balm, and realize I was picking then I'd stop. This happened so many times. Also, applying lip balm all the time would make my lips super smooth and eliminate those cracked lips that I could not resist to pick/bite. If you were going to apply lip balm once, definitely do it at night time as the next morning my lips would always feel smoother. The other thing that helped was every time my girlfriend saw picking she'd yell at me. Like, non stop. Super annoying at first because it was constant but having a vocal reminder definitely helped. I'll catch myself biting a little bit here and there but very small bites, no where as near enough to draw blood anymore, which is great! But unfortunately I've moved more heavily into biting the insides of my cheeks. Last week looked like I had a tooth pulled out there was so much blood. I bite up where my first teeth cheeks are, like where my mustache ends. Usually alternate between left and ride sides. Been super intense recently as I've picked up a new hobby and when I'm concentrating late at night I'd just go to town on my cheeks. I started to get like super dry / flaky skin on the outside of my cheek kind of like a red blemish, I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or if it's related. Anyway I've had the blemish for a few months now which is why I'm trying to limit my biting. Girlfriend doesn't see me biting my cheeks, and the lip balm trick doesn't seem to help as much. Now I'm trying to constantly use mouthwash multiple times a day every time when I draw blood. That or warm salt washes. And that's my journey to "STOP BITING YO MOUTH!".

I actually do this too... Usually I don't bite specifically for blood, but if there's a cut or something that's bleeding I suck it out. I feel ashamed and weird. You're not alone.

I do this so much. You aren't alone. What I do when I come to consciousness and realize what I'm doing, is, well, realize. Notice what I'm doing, and distract my mind from it.

Ha funny I have the same stupid habit of biting my lips and then sucking the blood out afterwards, And well it SUCKS. I am always left with painful soars but right when they heal, there I go again with the biting. I am literally biting them right now. I have never went to a doctor, but have told my family about my habit. Maybe one day the world will find a cure if they haven't already for this because it seems like I'm not the only one.
