Poll: How many pickers smoke cigarettes?

I have been smoking for about twenty five years and I find myself that if I am not smoking a cigarette then I'm wanting to pick at something ? Anyone else see or have this connection? Thanks for any replies.

I was a smoker for about twenty years... It probably started in high school, alongside my first breakouts and hence my picking but I quit about nine years ago.

Personally, I don't smoke. But I think that lots of people smoke as a replacement for any compulsion or habit. So it makes sense that you would use that as a replacement for this compulsion. Or the other way around. I don't know which came first, but one compulsion often replaces another, and when that one is taken away, the other one comes back.

I think you have a really good point Jay_J, and for some people I think this is true, for myself how ever, It is not, I use to smoke a lot, I couldn't go anywhere for longer then an hour or so with out getting agitated and needing a cigarette, it got to the point that if I didn't have one there for in the morning, Regardless of the time/cost, I would go out, rain hail or snow to get a pack. In saying this, My skin picking didn't start until a couple of year after I started smoking, and was caused by an abusive (now ex) boyfriend, who would always point out my faults and abuse me emotionally, Long story short, I started ripping my skin apart due to wanting perfect skin, because I was always told it was not. It became a vicious cycle of wanting prefect skin, but trying to achieve it by tearing it apart. I think the smoking did come into it by infecting the open wounds I had, as I would sit while smoking, and pick every spot I could find, the smoking and picking helped me to calm anxiety my ex caused for me, but for me it wasn't replacing one compulsion with another. I do believe smoking does reduce the bodies ability to heal, you inhale toxins into your lungs where it is absorbed into the blood stream and flushed through the body to he outer layers of skin, which is the part we pick at, if our blood is full of toxins, the skin finds it harder to heal and the wounds do get infected, especially when we have a cigarette in our hand and pick at the same time, no smoker will wash their hands after EVERY cigarette, meaning the toxins are on our hands from smoking, we then pick at our skin, infecting it from the out side as well as the inside. I found once I left my abusive boyfriend and did the hard task of quitting smoking, my anxiety levels dropped and I stopped picking. I have moments of anxiety where picking helps, and I am by no means healed, but my picking is more controlled and heals better due to the lack of toxins no longer in my body. I don't feel that smoking replaced the picking, not the picking replaced the smoking. I believe the two are only connected in that way for some. My apologies for the super duper long comment. haha

I started smoking years before i started to pick my face. I quit smoking for almost a year and my picking was just the same. I haven't picked my face for a while now (2 months) and that's because i made a choice not to. The only time i'm close to a mirror is for 5 minutes in the morning when i put on some light makeup. If i have to pluck my eyebrows then i do it with a facemask on.

I smoke but I'm not a heavy smoker, maybe a pack a month give or take. If I'm not smoking I'm picking a leaf or picking at my self.

I was a habitual smoker since 13 years. Nothing worked to give up smoking. Docs warned me about my lung infection but still I ignored. When situation became worst, I tried to give up smoking. It was a toughest task in my life to quit smoking. Visit http://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com to quit smoking.

I don't smoke and I never will because I don't want cancer and death but I pick and I'm trying to stop now. Smoking might be the cause of your picking. So stop stop smoking and then try to stop picking. Try picking a fruit apple that has imperfections. Cut your nails all of and wear gloves 24/7. Wear a rubber band around your wrist 24/7 and when you fell like smoking or picking at your skin pull it back. If you find yourself touching or looking at your pimples a lot put a bandaid over all your imperfections and leave it on 24/7.

I smoke a lot... mostly when stressed, which is like almost everyay. I know it hurts my health and i would be willing to quit it but it's just like picking so damn hard to stop.

I have picked since I was in junior high and I didn't start smoking until 17 or 18. I quit smoking for months and the picking didn't stop. I quit smoking for almost a year. Now I smoke again because it is a distraction from picking.
