Someone to talk to

Hello there :) First of all, I'm incredibly glad that I've found this website, where there are a lot of people who suffer from dermatillomania like me. It's especially great for me because I don't like to talk about this issue with my friends and family. I pick my fingers and lips and eat the scabs from them. I've told my friends about this before, but often time resulting in more stress, anxiety and guilt because they thought I just wanted to gain more attention and this skin-picking was just a silly habit. My mother also keeps on scolding me from time to time saying I don't have self-control and I don't know how to take care of myself in spite of being 15 already. In other words, this is not a serious matter to them. Therefore, I think telling other people is a really bad idea, as nobody understands how frustrating this is for me. And it's been 7 years since my skin-picking starts and my mother had brought me to the doctor. He gave me some advantan ointment which I applied on my fingers for a lot of years. It's obviously not working 'cause that cream is for treating eczema. Until recently,I've already stopped applying that cream. Right now, I'm extremely worried about my academic results and friendship problems. Hence, my fingers and lips are getting worse and worse. They are making me crazy. I desperately want someone to talk to… but i don't have one. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this… :) I'd really appreciate it if you can leave a message behind.

Hello, I understand you pain, and I am sorry to hear that you are going through a tough time. My family made me feel guilty for picking as well, and what people don't understand is that it's not something we can help. It helps so much to be able to read other people's stories and know that you're not alone. I'm 24 and I did not have anything like this when I was your age. High school was one of the worst periods in my history of picking. There is so much stress from grades, to friends, to others judging you. Everyone is already so worried about what they look like as a teenager so there is a lot of pressure to look your best and well, picking does not make that any better! I hope you can find some things to help with your picking, I'm sure you have already found some great advice by being on the forum! If you ever need advice, let me know! Oh, and refering to the previous posts, I have gone to a therapist before and I think that unless you are going to someone who specializes in compulsive behaviors like picking, don't bother. I'd put money on any random therapist not knowing much about the subject. It didn't help me, anyways. But who knows, everyone is different and you wont know for sure unless you try it yourself!

Hello! :) Thanks. I can't agree with you more. I'm really sorry to hear that high school was one of your worst periods. I can totally understand you. I've actually tried things like picking stuffed toys(stupid idea, I know) and putting adhesive bandages around my fingers, none of which worked unfortunately. And yeah I'm thinking about seeking some professional help. But damn, it must've sucked for you to spend money on some therapist not helpful at all >< Are you still picking now? Wish you all the best!

That's not stupid at all! Keeping my hands busy is one of the best things I can do to avoid picking. Yes, I still but it has gotten much better in the past couple months with some of the new methods I have been trying. When I get the urge to pick I walk a lap around my apartment complex, clean, or do anything to take my mind off of it. The thing that is helping the most is changing up my enitre bathroom routine. I stopped wearing any makeup on a daily basis which eliminated the need for me to stare at myself in the mirror. it was hard to get used to, but it has helped so much to decrease my urges to pick. Now, not only do I take almost no time to get ready, but my skin has cleared up from no makeup and me touching it less. I still slip up, especially when I'm watching TV or I give in and examine myself in the mirror. But it has been over two months and I am already noticing a huge improvement. I wish you all the best as well!
