Anyone begin using acrylic nails to stop picking?

Was wondering if getting acrylic nails would curtail the urge to pick since using my own nails to do it adds to the sensation. Maybe with fake ones, it would be too hard/awkward to continue picking. Sort of like gastric bypass for over-eathers! Let me know if you tried it. rdonnelly2021@comccast.net Would also like to be a part of a support system for picking with antone who wishes it as well.

Hi All, I have tried acrylic nails to stop picking but i found that instead of taking the skin off my face i was pressng into the pores, even in my sleep, and causing really bad blemishes that i would then use tweezers to pick. So it actually made it worse. Because not only do i pick but i use the tweezers all the time and have to try hiding them around my house to stop myself from getting to them. Nuts huh.

Ditto. I loved the way my nails looked with fake nails, and it drove me MORE nuts that I couldn't "feel" or "sense" where my nails or fingertips were. That lack of control actually made things worse because, instead of digging with my nails (which I still attempted for some stupid reason despite knowing it was futile), I'd dig out the pins and tweezers and I think probably caused a worse and definitely deeper hole. I may not have got the red bruising I got from pressing/digging with my finger tips, and definitely I didn't "slip" on my oily skin as much, but I'm confident the utensils I resorted to just added insult to injury. Literally.

I had acrylic nails once as a treat from my parents after exams were over. They looked lovely at the start and i found that i stopped picking purley because i couldnt physically as the nails were too long to do so. Although once the nails came off i instantly started picking again. I used to think I could keep getting my nails done and eventually get out of the habbit but i need to stop the habbit first then maybe have my nails done as a reward...something to look forward to maybe...

I have used them before to stop picking! And it use to help me A LOT. But eventually I began carrying tweezers with me to use to pick when I got the urge... or at work I would go into the restroom and use the pin on the back of my nametag. :( sigh

this sounds like OCD - obsessive compulsive disorder. i also am a picker but i take medication for it. i am not a nail biter per se but i do peel my nails when they get chipped. ask your doctors for something for the disorder and see if that works. good luck ---------------

I think it only would work for a while that is until you take them off. But what do I know, I have only used it once and it was just a cometic thing.

I have been an obsessive skin picker since I can remember. I must say though that when I have acrylic nails, my picking completely stops. I think it is because the sensation that I feel from picking with my own nails is not the same as picking with acrylics....I feel nothing with these. Therefore, I lose the urge to pick. It works for me, but may not work for everyone. My fingers heal and look lovely again. However, if the nails come off, I start again. A horrible habit / addiction.

Yes! By accident I found having acrylic nails stopped me picking completely. Unfortunately as soon as they are taken off I pick again.
