First post in the right direction

Hi everyone. I'm Marissa, I'm 26, and I think I've been picking on and off all my life. It used to just be mosquito bites, but it has evolved into fingers, toes, arms, and legs. I recall I journal entry I wrote at about 11 years old proclaiming "The first scab of the year has been picked!" with the blood to prove it. Now, it is year-round, daily, hourly. I've been treated for depression since 2002. I felt better and went off my meds (with doctor's knowledge) in 2005. My picking habit really got bad in 2005 as I had a stressful living situation at college and was graduating in May of 2006. I'm back on new meds, and sometimes I let my skin heal, but then there will be one.dry.spot. and I must get rid of it...you know. I can't wear shorts because my right leg is all mottled with scars, and I have spots on my arms now so I'm wearing these lightweight cardigans all the time this summer. I've read some of your folks' posts and I'm glad I'm not alone, but I'm sorry we all have to deal with this. I purchased AmLactin XL last night and it seems to be helping. I ordered Gloves in a Bottle for my hands. I need to stop this. I work at a library , handling books and other materials all day, and I'm constantly asked, "What happened?" It's a pain. And also, it looks and feels terrible, even though I get such stress relief from it. Depression and anxiety run in my family, my mom has psoriasis on her feet and is always picking at it, and she recalls a cousin who pulled out all her eyelashes. No wonder that I pick then, hmm? Thanks for reading my story. I hope we can all get better. Marissa

I think the majority of people here have an anxiety disorder with OCD and depression issues as well. Abuse in childhood also seems to be a factor and well as a high IQ. Seems like we are all subtle variations of one another. I pray we all find peace and with it decreased picking................

I started picking my scalp when I was 9 months old and I had to be put to bed in gloves. I have picked my scalp ever since but the face and other body part picking didnt really start until I was about 20. (Am now 35). I have had marginal results from medication.
