Adult Acne

Who here has adult acne? How old are you? I am 31 and suffer with MORE acne than I EVER did as a teenager. But sometimes I think I may suffer from all this acne because I pick so much! Is this just a vicious cycle???

Yes I get adult acne I have had bad skin all my life, i'm 36 now and as you say my skin gets worse the older I get & is worse now than when I was a teenager too. You are right when you say that it's because of picking and a vicious circle. I have got scabs on my face that have lasted over a year because I just pick & gouge at them & a face full of scars.

I went to see the dermatologist who suggested Roaccutane but there are so many side effects it has put me off, but this is suppose to be a brilliant treatment for acne. The side effects are quite severe & can cause suicide!!

Yep, tried that when I was 18 didn't work, if anything it caused more problems....I became overweight, and the acne started to appear more frequently on my cheeks. I then went on a lower dose kind which gave me headaches, so I stopped taking it and it took a long time for my body to re-balance. I went gluten free did detoxes took supplements, vit b5 in high doses...this worked great for large blind pimples, saw healers, but the thing that worked the best for me and still works is the Paleo diet, I highly recommend it! :) I still get small pimples, but they are barely noticeable until of course I pick at them. Most of the time I'm able to leave these ones alone and my skin takes care of them itself, but occasionally if I've eaten too much sugar I will get a small breakout, nothing bad I just freak out because of the type of breakouts I used to get and sometimes I will pick a bit too much. Of course it makes things really difficult because I get these small pimples not only on my face, but back, scalp, chest, shoulders and sides of neck. My next step is dealing with the emotions that cause my skin to break out in the first place. I've had this confirmed before during a kinesiologist session. You may want have this done...they use muscle testing to determine if your problem, ours being acne of course, is chemically induced ( diet, toxins etc) or emotionally induced. This emotional side is what I'm now unearthing. Hope this helps someone. x

I took Accutane 22 yrs ago, when I was 24, it does work but the acne comes back when you stop. You cannot keep taking it, it causes severe birth defects however I was done having kids by then. It also made my skin severely sun sensitive and made my lips blister and peel which I them proceeded to pick. I also caused deep, deep depression with thoughts of suicide it just wasn't a known or admitted side effect back then.

I tried Proactive but it did nothing for me. I too feel like if there was nothing to pick at I wouldn't have this problem. However I have a feeling that I might find something else to pick. Has anyone tried Murad, does it work??

Well I hardly get breakouts, they only happen when like a lot of us I pick at nothing and cause acne from fussing with my face for no reason. I use a acne face wash, a cream and a moisturizer every morning and my diet has plenty good skin foods and very little to no sugar. I notice that when I crave something with sugar like candy or chocolate I will break out so it may be because of the sugar or it may just be my mind being paranoid causing the anxiety that leads to the breakouts, either way I try to stay away from sugar and junk food and have the healthiest diet possible along with my acne products.

Hello all, I have tried proactive, skin peals, meds. However, when I get anxious and depressed I break out badly, I pick everything, finger nails, all over my face back, butt, arms, you name it I pick it, especially if a bit of skin is hanging off. I really need help to correct this disorder. In addition, when I am relaxed and happy the outbreaks becomes less. STRESS BRINGS IT ON. How do we eliminate stress in a time like this. I am so happy to be a part of this forum. I look forward to some help real soon. Thanks.

I've been using Proactiv for about a year now and it seems to help a little, because I don't seem to get big pimples anymore. I still get plenty of small blackheads, and if anything I'm just working harder at extracting every little thing that I find. I think that acne treatments would work if I gave my skin a chance to settle down. Unfortunately I can never seem to go very long without irritating and overstimulating my skin. I'll even use Proactiv and then attempt to squeeze at things before its even dry. I also get bumps on other areas such as my back and arms, and I don't want to put Proactiv there because it bleaches clothing. I've been taking Prozac for 4 months (20mg a day) and that has helped with my anxiety, irritability and tearfulness. Maybe picking is just too satisfying or maybe it's too deeply ingrained, but the Prozac doesn't seem to help. I'm going to ask my doctor about increasing the dosage, so I'll keep you updated.

They call mine grade 4 cystic acne and I am 56! I have been on accutane twice and tetracycline on numerous occassions! I am now trying Arbonne and blue/red light therapy. I am starting the 21 day challenge tomorrow. I encourage you to try that too! I got off of HRT and my face went crazy. After a month I got back on!!! I appreciate all of the encouragement on this forum.
