Just go see a therapist.

If you struggle with skin picking, you’ve probably gotten this advice more than once. And, on the surface, it certainly sounds like good advice. After all, excoriation disorder, commonly referred to as skin picking, is a recognized, diagnosable mental health disorder. Still, while the advice to “just see a therapist” may be well-intentioned, it misses the mark when it comes to managing a disorder like skin picking.

It’s true that therapy is undoubtedly valuable in the management of skin picking. However, not all therapeutic support is created equal when it comes to body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) like skin picking. Just as with general medical practitioners and specialists, there are differences in treatment specialties with therapists and programs too. Specialized care and support focused on BFRBs like skin picking can be transformative, and sometimes, it's the difference between continuing to struggle and finally finding relief.

The Limitations of General Therapy

Generally speaking, therapists are trained and licensed to provide essential mental health support for conditions such as anxiety, depression, and more. Also true is that some therapists choose to complete additional training and offer specialized care.

The same holds true for treatment programs. Some offer more general psychiatric are while others offer specialized services.

The fact is that some mental health disorders and issues require specialized treatment approaches. Skin picking is one of those disorders that require specific expertise that not every therapist or program is prepared to provide.

This is not a criticism of a therapist’s training or a program’s quality. It is simply a matter of the type of specialization and services needed for effective treatment.

Think of it this way: every licensed medical doctor can practice medicine. Not every licensed medical doctor has the expertise to do open heart surgery. Therapy is the same way. Not every therapist has the expertise to treat every disorder. Likewise, not every program offers the type of treatment And, BFRBs like skin picking require specific, evidence-based treatment protocols.

The Power of Specialization

One of the often cited concerns that people with skin picking voice is feeling misunderstood in therapy. They've been told to "just stop" or that their picking is merely a stress response. While stress can trigger picking episodes, this oversimplification misses the complex neurological and behavioral patterns that drive BFRBs. In fact, research has found higher treatment expectancy/credibility and the presence of guidance or therapist support to be positively correlated with program participation and treatment outcomes.

A skin picking specialist understands the nuances of skin picking in ways that can transform treatment. Specialists are trained in evidence-based treatment approaches including Habit Reversal Training and cognitive behavioral strategies for creating new behavior patterns. They can help you to identify your unique picking patterns and work with you to find strategies that meet your unique needs.

Perhaps most importantly, a specialist has experience. They’ve helped others just like you with many of the same struggles, bringing both evidence-based techniques and real-world experience to your treatment.

Daily Support: The Game Changer

Perhaps the most significant limitation of traditional therapy is the gap between sessions. Traditional treatment can feel isolating. Skin picking doesn't happen once a week in a therapist's office. It can happen multiple times daily. Waiting seven days between support sessions leaves you navigating your most challenging moments alone. Daily guidance, support, and accountability address this critical gap. When you have consistent access to resources and specialists, you benefit from:

  • Immediate feedback - If a strategy isn't working, you don't wait a week to adjust to it. Daily support allows for real-time problem-solving and strategy refinement.
  • Consistent accountability without shame - Knowing someone will check in with you creates gentle external motivation while you're building internal resilience. It’s not about guilt. Rather, it’s about having someone who understands the struggle.
  • Pattern recognition and intervention - Daily contact helps your therapist identify patterns. They can spot triggers, notice progress you might not recognize, and intervene before small setbacks become major relapses.
  • Sustained motivation and connection - Daily support provides the encouragement and connection needed to persist through difficult days, preventing the isolation that often exacerbates BFRBs.

The Skinpick.com Difference

You’re probably thinking, that’s great but does a program like that even exist? It does!

SkinPick.com’s program bridges the gap between traditional therapy and intensive support. The program offers daily support for managing skin picking through unlimited messaging with a therapist, interactive digital sessions, in-app tools, and community groups. You get personalized daily support from therapists who specialize exclusively in BFRBs and access to tools and resources without having to search for the rare specialist in your area or pay for daily in-person sessions that would be financially prohibitive for most people. You're not choosing between expert care and frequent contact. You’re getting both for one monthly fee.

Investing in You

Choosing specialized support isn't an indulgence, it’s a decision that acknowledges the complexity of BFRBs. If you've been struggling for months or years with your skin picking, specialized care may be the piece that has been missing.  Choosing a program that can provide daily guidance and support doesn't just improve outcomes. It can make difference between continuing to struggle and finally experiencing the freedom you deserve.
